Earth System Governance appointments to United Nations Environment Programme bodies

In the last months, a number of key earth system governance researchers have been appointed to various bodies related to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Norichika Kanie, Tokyo Institute of Technology and member of the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee; and Oran Young, University of California at Santa Barbara and Earth System Governance Associate Faculty, have been appointed to the UNEP Major Group and Stakeholders Advisory Group on International Environmental Governance. By establishing this Advisory Group, UNEP aims at getting relevant inputs from civil society groups from each region in the process of further strengthening international environmental governance (IEG). Joyeeta Gupta, VU University Amsterdam and member of the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee, has been appointed as a lead author for the UNEP's fifth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-5), a global, consultative, participatory process that builds capacity for conducting global environmental assessments and for reporting on the state and trends of the environment, future outlooks and policy options. Finally, Frank Biermann, VU University Amsterdam, and chair of the Earth System Governance Project, has been appointed to the High-Level Expert Panel in the United Nations Environment Programme new Foresight Process initiative. This Foresight Process shall inform the UN system and the greater policy community about the global environmental issues that need most attention over the next years.

United Nations Environment

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has made a foresight process that informed the system of UN about the environmental issues we are facing right now. This was one of the great moves made by the organization.

UNEP Foresight Process

Dear May,

Governance has been identified in this foresight process as top issue for the years to come. The report will be published by UNEP in February 2011. We will report on this website in detail, including interviews with panel members and background documentation.
