In the last months, a number of key earth system governance researchers have been appointed to various bodies related to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Norichika Kanie, Tokyo Institute of Technology and member of the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee; and Oran Young, University of California at Santa Barbara and Earth System Governance Associate Faculty, have been appointed to the UNEP Major Group and Stakeholders Advisory Group on International Environmental Governance. By establishing this Advisory Group, UNEP aims at getting relevant inputs from civil society groups from each region in the process of further strengthening international environmental governance (IEG). Joyeeta Gupta, VU University Amsterdam and member of the Earth System Governance Scientific Steering Committee, has been appointed as a lead author for the UNEP's fifth Global Environmental Outlook (GEO-5), a global, consultative, participatory process that builds capacity for conducting global environmental assessments and for reporting on the state and trends of the environment, future outlooks and policy options. Finally, Frank Biermann, VU University Amsterdam, and chair of the Earth System Governance Project, has been appointed to the High-Level Expert Panel in the United Nations Environment Programme new Foresight Process initiative. This Foresight Process shall inform the UN system and the greater policy community about the global environmental issues that need most attention over the next years.
